Colombia 1994
Colombia arrived at USA 1994 as one of the pre-tournament favourites, anointed by Pelé himself as potential champions. The golden generation of Carlos Valderrama, Faustino Asprilla, and Freddy Rincón had thrashed Argentina 5-0 in qualifying a result that sent shockwaves around the world. But the tournament turned into a nightmare. A 3-1 opening defeat to Romania set the tone, and against the United States, defender Andrés Escobar deflected a cross into his own net. Colombia were eliminated in the group stage. Ten days later, Escobar was murdered outside a nightclub in Medellín a tragedy that shocked the sporting world and forever darkened the memory of a campaign that had promised so much. Colombia's 1994 World Cup remains the starkest reminder that football can carry unbearable weight beyond the pitch.
