For the first time in their history, Cape Verde walked onto the World Cup stage. Bubista led the squad into the unknown.
Cape Verde's 2026 World Cup appearance is the tournament's smallest-nation fairytale. The ten-island archipelago of 525,000 people won CAF Group D ahead of Cameroon to qualify. The squad is a Portuguese-football system in miniature: most players came through Portuguese youth academies and play in the Primeira Liga or second divisions of Europe.
Cape Verde emerged from the group stage unbeaten, showing resilience in a tough opening round. In the knockout rounds, they were narrowly knocked out by Argentina in the Round of 32. The narrowest of defeats against Argentina ended what had been a promising tournament run.

Pedro 'Bubista' Leitão Brito, 53, has been coaching Cape Verde since 2020. A former national team player himself, he has built a genuinely collective defensive identity that has proven capable of frustrating Africa's traditional powers. Guided Cape Verde to their first World Cup winless under Bubista.
