England 1966
England won their only World Cup on home soil, on the afternoon of 30 July 1966 at Wembley, before 96,924 spectators. The final against West Germany was an epic drama. Helmut Haller gave the Germans the lead, but Geoff Hurst equalised quickly. Martin Peters made it 2-1, and when the title seemed secure, Wolfgang Weber equalised in the dying seconds. In extra time, Hurst struck the crossbar the ball bounced on the goal line in what remains the most controversial goal in history: did it cross the line? The Soviet linesman awarded the goal. Hurst completed his hat-trick in the final minute as Kenneth Wolstenholme delivered the iconic commentary: "Some people are on the pitch... they think it's all over... it is now!" Final score: 4-2. Captain Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy English football's most glorious moment.
