Senegal 2002
Senegal announced themselves with one of the most sensational opening matches in World Cup history: a 1-0 victory over defending champions France in Seoul, with Papa Bouba Diop scoring the winner and celebrating with a joyous dance beside the corner flag. The Lions of Teranga, managed by Bruno Metsu and featuring the creative brilliance of El Hadji Diouf, were making their World Cup debut and played with an exhilarating freedom. They topped their group, beat Sweden in the round of 16 with a golden goal from Henri Camara, and only fell to Turkey in the quarter-final. Senegal's run echoed Cameroon 1990 but went further they were the second African nation to reach the last eight and proved that World Cup newcomers could light up the tournament from day one.
