Uruguay 1970
Uruguay at Mexico 1970 fought their way to the semi-finals with the grit and defiance that defines La Celeste. In the quarter-final, they survived a gruelling battle against the Soviet Union, winning 1-0 in extra time through Víctor Espárrago. The semi-final against Brazil was one of the great matches of the tournament Uruguay took the lead through Luis Cubilla, but the Brazilians' irresistible attacking force, led by Pelé, Jairzinho, and Clodoaldo, turned the match around for a 3-1 victory. Uruguay finished fourth after a defeat to West Germany in the third-place match. Though they fell short of the final, the 1970 campaign proved that twenty years after the Maracanazo, Uruguay's fighting spirit remained undiminished a small nation that refuses to be intimidated by anyone.
