Argentina crossed the Río de la Plata with a brilliant generation led by Guillermo Stábile, the tournament's top scorer with 8 goals. In the final on 30 July at the Estadio Centenario, the Albiceleste led 2-1 at half-time thanks to bold, fast-flowing football. However, Uruguay roared on by their home crowd turned the match around in the second half for an emphatic 4-2 victory. The defeat in the very first World Cup final left a deep wound; according to reports, Argentine fans stoned the Uruguayan consulate in Buenos Aires the following day. Argentina would have to wait 48 years to lift their first World Cup.
