Argentina 1986
Mexico 1986 was Diego Armando Maradona's World Cup and nobody else's. In the quarter-final against England, a match charged with tension from the Falklands War, Maradona scored two goals that defined his legend: first, the Hand of God a goal punched in with his fist that the referee did not see; then, the Goal of the Century a run from his own half, dribbling past five English players before beating the goalkeeper. In the final on 29 June at the Estadio Azteca, before 114,600 spectators, Argentina led 2-0 through José Luis Brown and Jorge Valdano. West Germany fought back to 2-2 with goals from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Rudi Völler. But in the 84th minute, Maradona threaded the perfect pass for Jorge Burruchaga to score the 3-2 winner. Argentina lifted their second World Cup, but the tournament was, above all, Maradona's personal masterpiece.
