The Campaign

World Cup 1986

Germany embarked on a remarkable journey that carried them all the way to the final, where glory narrowly eluded them.

The Defining Moment

Germany 1986

West Germany, managed by Franz Beckenbauer, reached the 1986 final without being among the favourites, relying on resilience and character. In the final at the Azteca, they trailed 2-0 to Argentina and looked beaten. But Karl-Heinz Rummenigge pulled one back and Rudi Völler equalised a heroic comeback that silenced 114,600 spectators. Yet with six minutes remaining, Maradona produced a pass of genius for Jorge Burruchaga to score the 3-2 winner. West Germany fell to the greatest version of Maradona and would have to wait four years for their revenge which would come, in very different circumstances, at Italia 1990.
