Germany 1990
West Germany won Italia 1990 in a tournament defined by defensive football and penalty shootouts. Franz Beckenbauer, who had already won the title as a player in 1974, was seeking to become the first person to win it as a manager too. Lothar Matthäus, after a monumental season at Inter Milan, commanded the team from midfield with total authority. In the final on 8 July at Rome's Olimpico, before 73,603 spectators, Argentina with Maradona diminished and Caniggia suspended set up an ultra-defensive game. The only goal came from the penalty spot in the 85th minute: Andreas Brehme struck with his right foot he was naturally left-footed and did not miss. 1-0. Beckenbauer became the only person to win the World Cup as both player and manager, and German reunification months later made that title the last of West Germany.
