West Germany at Mexico 1970 produced one of the most iconic matches in football history. In the quarter-final, they came from 2-0 down against England the defending champions with Franz Beckenbauer pulling one back and Gerd Müller completing the comeback in extra time: 3-2. It was revenge for Wembley 1966. The semi-final against Italy became the Game of the Century five goals in extra time, Beckenbauer playing with a dislocated shoulder strapped to his body, and a final score of 4-3 to Italy. Müller scored 10 goals in the tournament the Golden Boot and Beckenbauer cemented his reputation as the most elegant defender in history. West Germany finished third, but the drama of their campaign the England comeback and the Italian epic ensured that 1970 would live in German football memory as the tournament of what might have been.
