Uruguay arrive in 2026 deep into Marcelo Bielsa's project. The Argentine obsessive took over La Celeste in May 2023 and has overseen a generational transition built around Federico Valverde, Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araújo, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Facundo Pellistri. The Luis Suárez / Edinson Cavani era has closed. Uruguay reached the 2024 Copa América semi-finals in the USA and will expect a comparable run in 2026.
Uruguay endured a difficult group stage, unable to advance despite moments of resistance. Their campaign featured a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia, a 2-2 draw with Cape Verde, and a narrow 0-1 loss to Spain. The narrowest of defeats against Spain ended what had been a promising tournament run.
