Messi completes football's greatest story

The Campaign

Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia on the opening day the greatest World Cup upset since 1950. They could have collapsed. Instead, Messi, at 35, took control of the entire tournament. He scored in every knockout round. Enzo Fernández emerged as a world-class midfielder. Julián Álvarez scored four goals. Emiliano Martínez saved penalties with theatrical brilliance. This was a team forged in adversity.

The Final

Argentina were 2-0 up with 10 minutes left. The World Cup was won. Then Mbappé scored twice in 97 seconds a penalty and a volley to drag France back from the dead. Extra time: Messi scored again, surely the winner. Mbappé completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot. 3-3. Penalties. Martínez saved one. Kolo Muani hit the post. When Gonzalo Montiel converted the final kick, Messi fell to his knees. The greatest player in history had won the only trophy that had eluded him. The greatest final ever played.

The Journey

France were defending champions but lost Pogba, Kanté, and Benzema to injury before the tournament began. They rebuilt around Mbappé, Griezmann, and a young midfield. They topped their group, beat Poland, England (in a tense quarter-final settled by Kane's missed penalty), and Morocco. Mbappé scored five goals before the final.

The Heartbreak

France were sleepwalking at 2-0 down with 10 minutes remaining. Then Mbappé produced the most extraordinary eight minutes in World Cup final history a penalty and an acrobatic volley to make it 2-2 in 97 seconds. In extra time, trailing again, he scored from the spot to complete a hat-trick. 3-3. In the shootout, Kolo Muani's shot was saved by Martínez. France lost. Mbappé had scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final and finished on the losing side.

The World in 2022

The world watches in winter

Football

The tournament was moved to November and December for the first time in history, disrupting every domestic league calendar in the world. Messi, at 35, was widely expected to be playing his last World Cup. France were the defending champions. Argentina had won the Copa América in 2021 and were unbeaten in 36 matches.

The World

Qatar became the smallest and richest nation to host a World Cup. The human cost of stadium construction, migrant worker conditions and labour rights, had dominated years of pre-tournament discourse. The pandemic had ended months earlier. War had returned to Europe with Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Preparation

Qatar built seven entirely new stadiums and renovated one, all within a 55-kilometre radius of central Doha. Open-air cooling technology was developed to keep pitch-level temperatures below 26°C despite the Gulf climate. The Ras Abu Aboud Stadium (Stadium 974) was built from recycled shipping containers, designed to be fully dismantled after the tournament.

The Venues

The Lusail Iconic Stadium, a 89,000-seat golden bowl in a purpose-built city north of Doha, hosted the final. Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor resembled a traditional Bedouin tent. Education City Stadium was integrated into a university campus. The compact geography meant fans could attend two matches in a single day. Eight stadiums hosted 64 matches in the most geographically concentrated World Cup ever.

The Host Cities

One city, eight stadiums

The Cities

Doha, Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah, and Lusail hosted matches, all within a 55-kilometre radius of central Doha. Lusail was a purpose-built city that did not exist a decade earlier. Teams were based in hotels and training sites across the Doha metropolitan area. The compact geography meant supporters could attend multiple matches in a single day using the new Doha Metro, an unprecedented convenience.

Impact

Qatar invested over $220 billion in infrastructure, including the Doha Metro, a new airport, motorway networks, and entire new urban districts. The tournament employed hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, and labour conditions became a defining issue of the hosting. An estimated 1.4 million visitors came to Qatar during the tournament. The compact model demonstrated an alternative to continent-scale hosting, but the cost per match was the highest in history. Qatar's post-tournament challenge is sustaining the infrastructure built for a population of 2.9 million.

Al Rihla 'The Journey' in Arabic was the fastest World Cup ball ever produced, designed for Qatar's high-speed, counter-pressing game. Its 20-panel design with Speed Shell texture and CRT-CORE improved accuracy and flight stability at pace. The ball's sustainability credentials (water-based inks, recycled materials) marked a new era. It carried the greatest final ever played 6 goals, 3 from Mbappé, 2 from Messi.

Messi's last dance, football's new order

The Contenders

Argentina arrived with Messi at 35, desperate for the only trophy that had eluded him. France had Mbappé, now the world's most explosive attacker, plus a squad deep enough to survive an injury crisis. Morocco became the first African and Arab nation to reach a semifinal. Japan and Australia showed Asian football's growing strength.

Style & Identity

The winter World Cup in Qatar disrupted football's calendar but produced one of the greatest tournaments ever played. Saudi Arabia's opening-day defeat of Argentina was the shock of the century. Morocco's defensive masterclass defied every prediction. The final Messi vs Mbappé, 3-3 after extra time, decided by penalties may be the greatest football match ever played.
