Italy 1970
Italy reached the 1970 final after one of the most epic semi-finals in history: the Game of the Century against West Germany, won 4-3 in a frantic period of extra time. But in the final at the Estadio Azteca, the Azzurri came face to face with the greatest Brazil of all time. Boninsegna equalised after Pelé's opening header, but from there the Brazilians produced a recital: Gérson, Jairzinho, and Carlos Alberto sealed a 4-1 victory. Italy fell without dishonour against a team that transcended sport, but the defeat fuelled a frustration that would only be healed by the title of 1982.
