Italy 1982
Italy won Spain 1982 by staging one of the most extraordinary redemption stories in football history. Paolo Rossi, returning from a two-year ban for a match-fixing scandal, came alive in the second phase with a historic hat-trick against Brazil (3-2) and decisive goals against Poland and West Germany. In the final on 11 July at the Santiago Bernabéu, before 90,000 people and with President Sandro Pertini celebrating from the stands, Rossi opened the scoring, Marco Tardelli struck the second and unleashed his iconic screaming celebration the urlo di Tardelli and Alessandro Altobelli sealed the 3-1 victory. Captain Dino Zoff, at 40 years of age, lifted the Cup: the oldest champion in history.
