Brazil 1938
Brazil at France 1938 introduced the world to Leônidas the Black Diamond, one of the first great stars of Brazilian football and the tournament's top scorer with 7 goals. His bicycle kicks, acrobatic volleys, and audacious skill dazzled European audiences who had never seen anything like him. Brazil's quarter-final against Czechoslovakia was so violent it required a replay the original match saw three players sent off and several injuries. In the semi-final against Italy, coach Adhemar Pimenta controversially rested Leônidas, reportedly saving him for the final. Italy won 2-1, and the decision haunted Pimenta for the rest of his life. Brazil finished third after beating Sweden. Though they fell short, the 1938 campaign was the moment South American football first truly captivated Europe a preview of the Brazilian brilliance that would conquer the world twenty years later.
